The Liberation of Lucca from Pisan Domination Exhibition

On Friday 5 April 2024, at the central headquarters of the State Archives (Palazzo Guidiccioni, piazza Guidiccioni 8, Lucca) the documentary exhibition entitled “1369-1370: the liberation of Lucca from Pisan domination, and the restoration of autonomy municipal through the imperial documents of ancient Tarpeia, the secret archive of the Republic of Lucca".

The exhibition is part of the initiatives promoted by the Municipality of Lucca for the Freedom Week (2-7 April 2024), an event aimed at helping the people of Lucca rediscover the rich historical and cultural heritage linked to the Freedom Festival, an ancient civil festival, established by the Lucca government in 1370 to commemorate the liberation of Lucca from Pisan domination sanctioned by the diploma of Emperor Charles IV of 8 April 1369. In addition to the aforementioned diploma, the subsequent privileges of June 1369 with which the emperor ensured the Republic of Lucca enjoyed a series of rights (such as that of minting money and founding the Studio Generale, i.e. the university will also be exhibited. ) As a foundation of its autonomy, until the appointment of the Elders of Lucca (executive body of the Republic) as vicars of the Empire (12 March 1370).

Also on display will be the volume containing the resolution of the General Council of Lucca of 1370 with which the celebration of Freedom was established, the new municipal statute of 1372, and the facsimile of the famous Croniche by Giovanni Sercambi, with the narration of the events that led to the liberation of Lucca. The exhibition, set up in the study room of Palazzo Guidiccioni, will be open to the public, upon reservation of the free guided tour, on Friday 5 April.
