The Giro d’Italia is one of the three most important cycling races in the world, the so-called Grand tours, and heralds the start of the professional cycling season every May. Those who manage to win the famous Trofeo senza fine can count themselves among the best cyclists in the world. With a challenging mix of flat, medium and high mountain stages, the Giro d’Italia has managed to become almost as famous as its big brother, the Tour de France, and every year attracts thousands and thousands of enthusiastic cycling fans to Italy or to their tv screens.
For the first time in 39 years the race passes through Lucca! The racers arrive in Lucca in the evening of May 8th and they leave in the morning of May 9th from Torre de Lago. There will be many sports events taking place in Lucca May 4 - May 9th (please see seperate post).
The caravan will arrive from via di Camaiore (provincial road 1 Francigena) in Torre around 5.15 pm and will continue on the same road crossing Cappella and Monte San Quirico up to the bridge over the Serchio. From here Borgo Giannotti, via Augusto Passaglia, viale Matteo Civitali, viale Pompeo Batoni, piazza Martiri della Libertà, viale Carlo Del Prete, viale Lazzaro Papi, piazzale Luigi Boccherini and arrival in viale Giosuè Carducci, in front of Campo Balilla.
