  • Lucca, Toscana, 55100 Italy (map)
Santa Zita Festival Lucca

From April 22 to 27 the traditional Flower Market Exhibition in Piazza Anfiteatro, Via Fillungo, Piazza Scalpellini and Piazza San Frediano; places that are filled with colors, joy and intense scents of flowers, sweets and local food and wine products.

Great celebration in Lucca for the celebration of Santa Zita, the little Saint of flowers who died on April 27, 1272, symbol of virtuous Lucca. Her body, preserved in the Basilica of San Frediano, is exposed during the feast days for offerings and vows. Santa Zita is the patron saint of housewives and maids, she herself was a maid for the wealthy Fatinelli family.

Tradition has it that during these days bouquets of daffodils and the classic herb sweets are offered. Small original gardens are set up in the squares surrounding the Basilica of San Frediano, cared for by local nurserymen and gardeners of the Botanical Garden of Lucca.
