Good Morning Cinema at Cinema Centrale presents Alto Knights, the film directed by Barry Levinson, takes place in the 1950s and features Vito Genovese and Frank Costello (Robert De Niro), Italian-American mafia bosses who run two powerful criminal families in a New York marked by violence and rivalry.
Their alliance, initially strong, is destined to deteriorate into a fierce competition for control of illegal trafficking. In 1957, tension reaches its peak when Genovese, feeling threatened, orders the assassination of Costello. The latter miraculously survives, but the blow he suffers marks the end of his career in crime.
Injured and tired, he decides to retire from the mafia, leaving Genovese to dominate unchallenged. However, the assassination attempt and his retirement mark only a chapter in the long and turbulent rivalry between the two, which has defined a dark era in the history of the Italian-American mafia.
