In the Footsteps of Gaugin

  • Ragghianti Fondazione (map)

On Monday 24 February at 5.45 pm , in the “Vincenzo Da Massa Carrara” conference room in via San Micheletto, 3 in Lucca, the Ragghianti Foundation - ETS hosts the meeting “In the footsteps of Gauguin - from France to the Tropics the mirage of Paradise” , organised on the occasion of the release of Gloria Fossi's latest book (Giunti, 2024). (In Italian)

The initiative, which is free to attend, will feature, in addition to the author, art historian Silvestra Bietoletti and Alessandro Tosi , professor at the University of Pisa. The meeting will be introduced and moderated by Paolo Bolpagni , director of the Ragghianti Foundation.

Gloria Fossi's richly illustrated monograph is a detailed and up-to-date documentation on the work and life of Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), following the thread of the places where he lived: from Paris to Brittany, from Panama to Martinique, from Normandy to Denmark, from Provence to Polynesia. The aim is to investigate the deepest essence of his art and his thought. What emerges, strengthened, is the figure of a great artist, passionate about painting and sculpture, avid reader, scholar of myths and ancient religions: the first Westerner to admire and respect the customs and beliefs of distant countries, without indulging in easy exoticism.

Gloria Fossi is an art historian, and her career has developed on two parallel tracks: scientific research, with investigations all over the world on the trail of rare and unexplored artists and themes, and high-level educational and journalistic dissemination. She has published successful books, catalogues and manuals, articles in newspapers and magazines and radio and television appearances (Rai, Sky Arte). She has been collaborating with the magazine «Art e Dossier» since 1987.
